MACOMB, IL -- Gold, silver, bronze and merit .... a bit of everything from the 14th Annual Service Industry Advertising Awards (SIAA) goes to Western Illinois University's Office of Marketing and Office of University Relations for WIU's recent social media and recruitment efforts.

The divisions were recognized with a gold award for social media, "The Western Challenge - #LeatherneckStrong;" a silver award for a single newspaper ad, "Keeping the Region Strong;" two bronze awards for social media and total ad campaign for "#RockySnapTakeover" and "Tuition Reduction" campaign, respectively; and three merit awards for publication: "Western: The Magazine for Alumni," social media: "#WIUGrad16" Storify and television ad, "I Am a #SuccessStory, I Am a Leatherneck" featuring WIU Senior Luke Otto.

SIAAwards is the only advertising awards to specifically recognize the advertising achievements in the service industry. SIAAwards recognizes the creativity and communication accomplishments of the service industry, recognizing the best service industry advertisement, print communications, websites, television, radio and electronic communications and social media.

"While many universities, colleges and other institutions contract with external marketing, advertising and production agencies to complete many of their promotional products, I am most proud of the fact that we do our work in house," said Brad Bainter, vice president for advancement and public services, who, along with Darcie Shinberger, oversees University Marketing. "Between University Marketing, University Relations, the Visual Production Center and University Television, the final products that Western puts out, from our new alumni magazine to social media efforts to promotional and marketing campaigns, are outstanding."

This is the third recognition for the work completed by University Marketing and University Relations. Last year, the University departments were awarded silver and merit awards in the 2015 Higher Education Marketing Report's 31st Annual Educational Advertising Awards, and the divisions took top honors in the 2015 Collegiate Advertising Awards (CAA) program, receiving "gold" status from the CAA.

Western's marketing and social media campaigns, as well as recruitment materials and initiatives, are the result of coordinated efforts between University Marketing and University Relations, with support from University Television and the Visual Production Center.
