MACOMB, IL – Funeral services for retired Western Illinois University Department of Educational Foundations chair Joseph Kersting, 83, of Macomb, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Macomb.

Kersting passed away Friday, Sept. 30 in Macomb.

He earned his bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University; a master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; a master's degree in counseling and guidance and a doctoral degree in educational psychology, both from St. Louis University.

Kersting became a WIU professor in 1970 in the University's Department of Educational Foundations. He was also director of both the Corrections Education program and the Bilingual/Bicultural Education program.

During his time at Western, Kersting was named an outstanding WIU senior researcher and wrote numerous grants that benefitted the University and its students.

Prior to coming to WIU, Kersting spent 13 years teaching, coaching and counseling in public schools in Illinois and Missouri, and he served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He retired from Western in 1995.

Kersting is survived by his wife, Carol, three daughters and their families and one sister.
