MACOMB, IL -- Students, alumni, faculty and staff are invited to participate in Western Illinois University's annual Homecoming tradition, Paint the Paws, Friday, Sept. 30.

Paint the Paws, which is sponsored by the Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC), the governing board of the Student Alumni Association, involves the painting of more than 200 paws along University Drive and Western Avenue to welcome alumni and visitors to campus on Homecoming.

"This year's event promises to provide great entertainment with the addition of an 'All-Star' Alumni team coming out to paint with everyone," said SALC Adviser Joellen Hatchett. "President Thomas will also be joining us to ready the campus for Homecoming."

Two Paint the Paws shifts will be held Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. First-shift painters should check in at Western Hall by 12:45 p.m. and second-shift painters should check in by 2:45 p.m. SALC will provide supplies. Student groups, faculty, staff and alumni interested in participating should contact Hatchett at JW-Hatchett@wiu.edu. This year's Homecoming theme is "Rocky in Space: Our Pride is Out of this World."

While Paint the Paws kicks off Homecoming for the students, the annual Celebrating Town & Gown event serves as the official kick-off for Western's Homecoming. The signature University and community event, hosted by WIU President Jack Thomas and Macomb Mayor Mike Inman, will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at The Forum in Macomb. WIU and Macomb community members are invited to attend.
