Four Named to WIU Alumni Council

MACOMB, IL – Four Western Illinois University alumni have been appointed to three-year terms on the 26-member WIU Alumni Council.

The new members include Joseph Brenner, of North Aurora (IL), a 2002 graduate with a bachelor's degree in information technology; Shawn Johnson, of Clive (IA), a 1996 graduate with a bachelor's degree in information systems; Gayle Spencer, of Savoy (IL), a 1987 graduate with a master's degree in college student personnel; and Christopher Wheeler, of Mount Prospect (IL), a 1997 graduate with a bachelor's degree in political science and a 2000 graduate with a master's degree in college student personnel.

Brenner is currently a business process analyst for the College of DuPage and has been employed by the college since 2007. He received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Northern Illinois University in 2007.

Johnson is an IT senior business analyst for Principal Financial Group in Des Moines (IA) and has worked for the company since 1996.

Spencer is the director of the Illinois Leadership Center at the University of Illinois. She received her bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and her doctoral degree from Kansas State University in student counseling and personnel services. In 2005, Spencer received WIU's Alumni Achievement Award.

Prior to coming to the University of Illinois, Spencer was the associate dean of student life, director of student activities and services, assistant dean of student life and coordinator of student activities/services for Kansas State University.

Wheeler is currently a financial product specialist for Skyward, in Stevens Point (WI). Before working for Skyward, Wheeler was a residence hall director for Ferris State University and for Western Michigan University.

The WIU Alumni Council, comprised of 25 alumni and the president of the Student Alumni Association, helps with the recruitment of students, selects Alumni Award recipients and was instrumental in establishing the Student Alumni Association. The council meets three times a year. The next meeting is Friday, Oct. 7.
