MACOMB, IL — On Monday, July 4, students from Gwangju University (Korea) and Nantong Normal College (China) volunteered to be part of a local Independence Day tradition with Macomb Mayor Mike Inman. The tradition includes putting up American flags in Macomb's Chandler Park.

According to Dana Vizdal, assistant director for Western's Center for International Studies, the Korean and Chinese students at WIU are participating in a four-five week English as a second language (ESL) program, during which they take courses to improve their English-language skills and participate in activities to learn about American culture.

Later in the day on July 4, the groups attended a picnic, sponsored by the Center for International Studies, held at the Lakewood Shelter at Everly Park in Macomb.

Vizdal said students from more than a dozen countries were present to celebrate the day, and their celebration included playing games and experiencing traditional American food before watching the fireworks at Macomb's annual July 4 celebration, which was held in WIU's Q-Lot this year.
