Paul Nollen Obituary

MACOMB, IL – A memorial service for WIU Professor Emeritus Paul Nollen will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in Macomb. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, July 1 at the funeral home.

Nollen passed away Sunday, June 26.

After receiving his bachelor's degree in biology from Carroll College in Wisconsin, Nollen received his master's degree in mycology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and his doctoral degree in parasitology from Purdue University.

Nollen came to Western to teach biology, invertebrate zoology and parasitology in 1967. During his 32 years at Western, Nollen authored 74 academic papers for regional, national and international journals, as well as presenting at numerous scientific meetings.

On campus, Nollen mentored graduate students and coordinated the WIU Department of Biological Sciences' honors program for 21 years. He was also awarded 12 presidential merit/faculty excellence awards, was named the Annual Faculty Lecturer in 1975, was recognized as the College of Arts and Sciences outstanding researcher in 1987 and served as a WIU Distinguished Professor from 1990-92. He was later selected as a Board of Governors Universities Distinguished Professor.

Nollen was also heavily involved in the Macomb community, including delivering Macomb Mobile Meals for more than 35 years and volunteering with the Loaves and Fishes food bank, local Boy Scout troops, Macomb's CROP Walk, Macomb Beautiful and the Macomb First Presbyterian Church. He also volunteered for Macomb's Habitat for Humanity organization, serving on the board and as executive director from 2002-09.
