MACOMB, IL - If you want to hear soprano Assistant Professor Penelope Shumate perform this year, you can go to Barcelona, New York—or to the free Faculty Chamber Music Recitals of the WIU Summer Music Institute.

This summer's performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 17, and at 8 p.m., Thursday, June 23, both in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

Shumate is one of a number of the WIU School of Music faculty members who will perform throughout the world this summer—as well as at the WIU Summer Music Institute.

Also appearing on the June 17 recital will be clarinetist Professor Eric Ginsberg—performing "The Abyss of the Birds" from "The Quartet for the End of Time," by Olivier Messiaen; and violinist Associate Professor Julieta Mihai, performing the "Fantaisie brillante sur des motifs de l'Opéra "Faust' de Gounod" of Henryk Wieniawski. The June 23 recital will include violist Associate Professor István Szabó, performing the "Rondo" from the "Sonata for Viola and Piano," by Niccoló Paganini; flutist Lynne Stukart, performing "Hypnosis for flute and piano," by Ian Clarke; and members of the WIU brass faculty, performing works of McCarthy, Ralph Vaghan Williams and Victor Ewald.

Both recitals will feature Shumate performing works by Verdi and Handel, with pianist Po-chuan Chiang.
