MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety Police Sergeant Derek Watts has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for May.

Watts was hired in November 1998 as a police officer, and was promoted to police corporal in July 2006. He was promoted to his current position in July 2009.

Watts' nominator called him a "knowledgeable, professional and excellent employee."

"He volunteers for many programs for different areas of the University, as well as participating in several campus events outside of work hours, including St. Baldricks, Polar Plunge and Crime Stoppers," said the nominator. "He goes above and beyond his job requirements to assist others within the campus community, and he does so with enthusiasm."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Connie Lincoln at CM-Lincoln@wiu.edu.
