MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies recently awarded five scholarships.

This year, one student, Matthew McAnally, a sophomore religious studies major from Rushville, IL, received three of the scholarships, including the $750 Mary Olive Woods Academic Scholarship for the spring semester; the $1,000 Paul Mundschenk Scholarship in Religious Studies and the $500 Mary Olive Woods Study Abroad Scholarship. The Study Abroad scholarship will help McAnally with expenses related to the class "Stories of India."

The Mundschenk Scholarship is awarded to a religious studies student who has an interest in the manner in which religion is intended to help illuminate the inner human journey through life. The Mary Olive Woods Academic Scholarship is open to majors in the WIU Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies who have a GPA of 3.0 or above and are enrolled in a religious studies course.

McAnally works full time for the Illinois Department of Corrections, his employer for the past 15 years. He is married with two children, and his future goal is to obtain the Chaplaincy position at the facility where he works.

Also receiving Mary Olive Woods Study Abroad Scholarships were Lindsey Kuitse, a senior religious studies and Spanish double major, of Colorado Springs, CO, and a recipient of a Mary Olive Woods Academic Excellence Award for 2015-16, and Kiri Hamilton, a graduate student in counseling from Davenport, IA.
