Connecting Vets to Careers Event at WIU March 29

MACOMB, IL -- A program designed to help veterans translate their service, education and experience into employment opportunities will be held at Western Illinois University Tuesday, March 29.

"Connecting Vets to Careers," which will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the University Union Grand Ballroom, is open to all veterans and service members at WIU and in surrounding communities and neighboring colleges and universities. Veterans, employers, public and private organizations and community leaders will network to bring awareness to the value of hiring veterans.

During the career fair, employers will be seeking to fill vacancies and internships, and will offer assistance to veterans in preparing for employment. Professionals from various organizations and agencies will be available to provide direct services to veterans and service members. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center will be located just behind the Union.

Breakout sessions will also be held from 2-3 p.m. in the Union Capitol Rooms, featuring a panel of student veteran graduates who have successfully transitioned to the workforce. Mac McKelvey, veterans outreach coordinator with Illinois Department of Central Management Services, will provide a 2016 state employment briefing in the Springfield Room.

Veterans, service members, employers, community agencies and public organizations from Aurora, Jacksonville, Normal, Springfield, Decatur, Quad Cities, Pekin, Peoria, Quincy, Monmouth, Mt. Sterling, Macomb, Dallas City, Rock Island and other areas will attend.

Featured employers include Aflac, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Erie Insurance, Federal bureaus of Investigation and Prisons, GE Transportation, Goodwill Industries of Illinois, Hero 2 Hired, HNI- HON & Allsteel, Illinois departments of Central Management Services, Employment Security, Human Services and Veterans Affairs, Illinois State Police, Lowe's, McDonough County Sheriff's Department, Modern Woodman Fraternal Financial, Aurora, Normal and Peoria police departments, Peoria Fire Department, Peoria Vet Center, The Scotts Company, Smithfield Foods, Springfield Mobile Vet Center, Unique Personnel Consultants, Unity Point Health- Methodist, UPS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Social Security Administration, Volt Workforce Solutions, WestPoint Financial Group, WIU Human Resources, XPO Logistics and Ziegler- Industries.
