Student, Employee Commended for Assistance

MACOMB, IL – A Western Illinois University student and a Sodexo employee received letters of commendation from WIU President Jack Thomas for their quick action in response to an incident Oct. 21 involving a student having a seizure in the University Union.

Ashley Case, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major from Ashton, and Robin Harris of Sodexo were honored today (Nov. 4) by Thomas and Office of Public Safety Director Scott Harris.

According to Scott Harris, Case, a student worker for Sodexo, and Harris were working in their Sodexo offices in the University Union when the pair overhead officers being dispatched to assist with a medical emergency call. The student in distress had struck his head, resulting in a cut. Harris and Case prevented the student from further injuring himself during the seizure, and both continued to assist the officers until the arrival of the ambulance.

"We are proud to have Ashley and Robin as a member of our University community. Their swift action helping someone in need is truly appreciated and is indicative of the wonderful and caring individuals we have at Western Illinois University," Thomas said.

OPS Officer Guy Huston, who responded to the scene along with Sgt. Curt Bilbrey, added, "Ashley and Robin went above and beyond what is expected from a citizen when she administered care for a stranger in need of medical attention."

In addition to the letter of commendation, Case and Harris received an OPS uniform patch.

"On behalf of the officers of Public Safety at Western Illinois University, I would like to thank Ashley and Robin for their assistance," Harris said.
