MACOMB, IL -- Twice a year, when it's "spring forward" and "fall back" in regard to setting our clocks, fire safety officials often use these opportunities to remind individuals to change their smoke alarm batteries. While most of the reminders are aimed at homeowners, college students, who reside both on and off campus, should also heed fire safety reminders, according the Office of Public Safety at Western Illinois University.

Students residing off campus should change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries, install fresh furnace filters and encourage the homeowner/landlord to conduct a furnace safety check, noted OPS Director Scott Harris.

Students residing on campus should be aware of all fire safety procedures on campus, most notably paying attention to a fire alarm and evacuation requirements, as well as heeding all fire safety protocols within campus buildings, such as no open flames allowed (candles, etc) or devices such as hot plates.

"I'd also like to remind our campus community that it is illegal to tamper with alarms, and if you see or know of someone tampering with the fire alarms, or activating the alarms without cause, contact Public Safety," Harris added.

In addition, students are advised to contact OPS at (309) 298-1949 or 9-1-1 if they observe anyone or anything suspicious on their floors. Individuals can also contact Macomb Area Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS or (309) 836-3222, or texting CRIMESTOP with your tip to CRIMES (274637).
