MACOMB, IL – Through its annual Big Pink Volleyball Tournament, Western Illinois University has provided yet another substantial contribution to help fund the cause of beating breast cancer.

According to Matt Schaefer, a graduate assistant for recreation events at Campus Recreation, Western's 15th annual Big Pink Volleyball (BPV) tournament, held Oct. 26-29, has raised $6,100 so far. That amount does not include the funds raised from the t-shirt orders.

Campus Recreation Associate Director Judy Yeast noted the money raised will be split between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation (Peoria, IL, affiliate) and the McDonough District Hospital (Macomb, IL) Mammogram Assistance Program.

"We had 122 teams participate in this year's tournament," Schaefer added.

Winning 2015 BPV teams include:

  • Club and Organization Bracket Winner: Cute and Fluffy
  • Residence Hall Bracket Winner: TP5
  • Greek Bracket Winner: The Betas
  • Independent Bracket Winner: The Mammo Slammers
  • Faculty Bracket Winner: Becky's Brigade
  • Overall Winner: The Mammo Slammers

"The captain of the Mammo Slammers team, Denis Chapan (Alsip, IL), a graduate student in the psychology department, has played BPV for four straight years and has won his bracket each of those years," Schaefer noted.

"Overall, since the event's inception in 2002, we have raised more than $117,000 to support breast cancer awareness and cancer screenings," Yeast added.

Big Pink Volleyball is sponsored by Thompson Hall (University Housing and Dining Services) and Campus Recreation.
