Two WIU Broadcasting Students Win National Awards

MACOMB, IL - Two Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting students have been awarded Student Television Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America chapter.

The student winners received a Crystal Pillar award at the 39th Mid-America Emmy gala in St. Louis, MO, Saturday, Oct. 3. The students and broadcasting Instructor Jasmine Crighton were honored on stage at the gala.

Mario Calero, a senior broadcasting major from Elgin, IL, won best animation, graphics and special effects for his work on the student-produced newscasts, NEWS3 "Live at 4" and NEWS3 "Good Morning Macomb."

NEWS3 "Live at 4" is a student-produced newscast that airs live every semester twice a week. "Good Morning Macomb" is an additional newscast added in February 2014, airing at 9 a.m. on Fridays. Calero works as an anchor, executive producer and director of the newscasts.

Andrew Bacon, a recent graduate of WIU's sports broadcasting program, from Chatham, IL, won best editor for his work on promotional videos for WIU Athletics. A football and basketball promo in his submission aired on WGEM-TV and KHQA-TV in Quincy, IL.

Bacon now works as an advanced media intern for the Atlantic Coast Conference, an NCAA Division I athletic conference composed of 15 schools, sponsoring championships in 25 sports.
