MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University landscape maintenance grounds gardener Gerilee Vail has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for September.

Vail was hired at WIU in August 1980 as an extra help cashier I in the University Union. In August 1994, she was moved to extra help cashier II, and in May 2005, she was hired in her current position.

According to Vail's nominator, she works hard to motivate everyone around her and to "strive for excellence."

"She often works through breaks to finish tasks and help coworkers," said her nominator. "She is a positive example to employees, students and visitors to Western, and she often proudly wears a Western alumna shirt. She displays an extraordinary work ethic and pours her heart and soul into whatever job she is working on."

Vail will be presented with her award at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at the WIU Physical Plant.

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Alisha Looney at AA-Looney@wiu.edu.
