Dear Campus Community,

I am honored, as the president of Western Illinois University, to extend a warm welcome to our returning students, faculty and staff, as well as welcome our newest Leathernecks to WIU.

I look forward to meeting many of our new students at move-in activities Friday, August 21, including the New Student Convocation at 5:30 p.m. in Western Hall, followed by the President's Family Picnic on the campus mall, near the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center. Students, faculty and staff are invited to take part in Rocky After Dark: First Night beginning at 8:30 p.m. August 21 at Hanson Field. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are also invited to attend the annual Community-University Partnership Program (CUPP) Welcome Back Block Party, which will be held from 5-7 p.m. on the front lawn of Sherman Hall on Wednesday, September 9.

Other dates to remember for Fall 2015 include Wednesday, September 23, as we will celebrate Founders' Day to mark the 116th anniversary of the founding of Western Illinois University. In October, we will celebrate Family Day Saturday, October 10, and we welcome our alumni and friends back to campus for Homecoming October 2-3.

Now in its 12th year, the Western Illinois University Theme has brought speakers, programs and events to our campus, and has challenged our community to think critically about a variety of issues and topics. This year's theme is "Environment: A Foundation for Social Responsibility." I invite you to attend the programs and events associated with this year's theme.

Please remember our University's commitment to equity, civility and diversity. It is our expectation that all members of the University and local community will behave in a respectful manner and treat others with courtesy and mutual respect.

Wear your purple and gold with great pride, and remember that every day is a great day to be a Leatherneck. I wish each of you a successful academic year.

Sincerely,

Jack Thomas
President
