Bidegaray Named Director of Study Abroad and Outreach

MACOMB, IL -- Pedro Bidegaray, international consultant in education and development for Educate Tanzania, has been named director of Western Illinois University's Study Abroad and Outreach, effective June 1, according to Rick Carter, executive director of the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach.

In his position at Educate Tanzania (a non-governmental organization based in Minnesota), Bidegaray has supported efforts to develop an academic curriculum for a new agricultural college in Karagwe, Tanzania. Prior to that (2011-14) he was the director of international programs, University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences. In that role, he was responsible for integrating an international perspective into the mission of the college, with an emphasis on internationalization of curriculum and global development. From 1995-2010, he worked for EARTH University in Costa Rica, serving as director of international academic programs from 2006-2010.

"We are excited to have Dr. Bidegaray join Western Illinois University and the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach. His many years of experience and his knowledge of study abroad and other international opportunities will serve our students and faculty well," Carter added. "In addition, his expertise will allow us to further enhance partnership programs with international educational institutions."

Bidegaray has also served as an instructor of international agriculture at the University of St. Paul and a professor of humanities at EARTH University. He has presented at international conferences, and has co-authored several articles for professional publications. Bidegaray is a member of the Society of Applied Anthropology, the American Anthropological Association and the Association of International Educators (NAFSA).

Bidegaray earned his doctorate and master's degrees in applied anthropology from the University of Kentucky and his bachelor's degree in applied anthropology from Pontificia Universidad Católica (Lima, Peru).
