MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Chemistry hosted a research day and carnival Monday, April 13 on the Macomb campus.

Students participated in a research poster session during the event.

The undergraduate poster winner was Hannah Drake, a senior forensic chemistry major from Charleston, IL. Drake's win earned her the opportunity to represent the WIU Department of Chemistry at the WIU Undergraduate Research Day April 15.

The winner of the graduate poster competition was Shashidhar Poreddy, a chemistry graduate student from India. Both Drake and Poreddy were awarded certificates and $25 gift cards.

The day's events also featured a carnival for students, which included games, a mad scientist photo booth and carnival foods.

To cap the event, Megan Long, a senior chemistry major from Rock Island, IL, and president of the WIU Chemistry Club was able to give a pie in the face to chemistry Professor T.K. Vinod. Since April 1 students have made donations to one of five containers designated for chemistry faculty members. The event helped raise $381 for the WIU Chemistry Club.
