MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University alumna Melody Betts visited the University in April to share her theatrical experiences with theatre and dance students.

Betts, who receive her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2009, is known for her appearances in theatrical performances in Chicago, IL, Milwaukee, WI, Kansas City, MO, and New York, as well as appearances on television shows, such as "Chicago PD" and "Chicago Code."

Betts answered questions for the WIU students who are preparing to graduate and enter similar career paths.

"It's such a gift to our students when solid, working, viable artists come share their time and talent," said WIU Assistant Professor of Theatre Lysa Fox. "It's even more special when it's an alum of our program. The fact that she sought out this opportunity for her and our students speaks volumes about what kind of a person and artist Melody is. We try to instill the attitude of 'pay it forward' and that is exactly what Melody did - she demonstrated that amazing attribute."

Betts encouraged students to keep things in perspective. In theatre, rejection happens frequently, due to the nature of auditions. Betts advised her audience to "forget the no's quicker, rejoice in the yes's longer."

Betts also encouraged students to continue honing and expanding their skills. Learning new dialects, dance/movement and combat skills are just a few of the many examples she shared. She said many of the skills she learned were acquired while she was a graduate student at WIU, including dialects with Associate Professor of Theatre Carolyn Blackinton and tap class with Dance Professor Denise Brakefield.

After receiving multiple requests from the students, Betts closed the session by singing an impromptu a cappella song.

"Melody's many successes are a testament to her talent, her professionalism and her business savvy," said WIU Professor of Theatre Bill Kincaid. "Her desire to return and share her experiences with WIU students is a testament to the special place our department holds in her heart. It is always such a joy to see a former student whose life is bringing them satisfaction, whether professionally or personally. Melody's message of inspiration was a real gift to our students."
