MACOMB, IL — This Saturday (March 7) the American Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation (ADFPF) will host the 2015 "Make It Macomb" Single Event Nationals at Western Illinois University.

Held annually, the ADFPF Single Event Nationals is the largest event of its kind that follows the strict anti-steroid protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency, according to Mike Chase, meet director. Approximately 70 weightlifters—men and women, big and small, old and young—will take their best shots at drug-free world records in Western's Brophy Hall. The March 7 competition is open free to the public.

The event schedule is as follows:

  • 7 a.m. weigh-ins begin
  • 8:45 a.m. competition meeting
  • 9 a.m. lifting begins (will end at 1 p.m.)

An awards ceremony will begin 30 minutes after the end of competition.

"With amphitheater seating and held on two lifting platforms, this year's national event will provide spectators with a good view of the action," Chase explained. "Approximately 500 individual lifts will be attempted over the five hours of competition, with lifters competing in one or more of the six powerlifting disciplines: raw squat, bench-press, deadlift, equipped squat, equipped bench-press and equipped deadlift," he added.

According to WIU Department of Kinesiology National Strength and Conditioning Association Program Director Tim Piper (who is also an assistant professor in the department), powerlifting is a weight class-contested sport; the lightest lifters will check in at a tick less than 100 pounds, with the heaviest approaching 400 pounds.

"Similarly, the sport allows competitors to compete as open class lifters, or within several age-defined classes. High school students will be among the competitors, and they will share the platforms with some 'kids' in their 70s. This event will present spectators with enormous feats of strength and inspiring feats of willpower," Piper added.
