MACOMB, IL -- John Smith, assistant director at Western Illinois University's Beu Health Center, has been named interim director of Beu, through June 30, according to Vice President for Student Services Gary Biller.

Smith has served as assistant director at Beu since January 2009. He replaces Mary Margaret Harris, who retired Dec. 31. Prior to serving as assistant director, Smith was the compliance specialist in WIU's Office of Sponsored Projects, where he worked to ensure that University-based research met federal guidelines and integrity standards. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member for WIU's psychology department since 2005.

During his tenure as assistant director, Smith has overseen WIU's Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Resource Center, and further developed Beu's initiatives for health education at Western.

"John brings strong, practical experiences to the interim director position," Biller added. "He knows Western Illinois University well, and he will continue the outstanding services, programs and resources provided by Beu."

Smith received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Western and his master's degree in gerontology from Western. He is a member of the American College Health Association.
