Showcase of Bands Scheduled for Feb. 13-14

MACOMB, IL – The 27th annual Western Illinois University School of Music Showcase of Bands will be held Friday-Saturday, Feb. 13-14 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

Three high school bands have been invited to attend masterclasses at Western: Pontiac High School Symphonic Band, United Township High School Symphonic Band and Mehlville High School (MO) Concert Band. An honor band, made up of high school student musicians from Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, will also perform.

The Showcase of Bands gives high school musicians the opportunity to participate in and learn from nationally-recognized wind band conductors and WIU's applied and conducting faculty.

This year's event will also include guest conductors Frank Wickes, the retired director of bands at Louisiana State University, and Daniel Schmidt, the director of bands at Northern Arizona University.

Performances as a part of this year's festival include:

• Friday, Feb. 13 – 7:30 p.m. – COFAC Recital Hall, WIU Wind Ensemble performance, guest conducted by Wickes.

• Saturday, Feb. 14 – 1 p.m. – COFAC Recital Hall, Showcase of Bands – high school musicians directed by Wickes.

• Saturday, Feb. 14 – 4 p.m. – COFAC Recital Hall, WIU Concert Band performance, guest conducted by Schmidt.

• Saturday, Feb. 14 – 4:30 p.m. – COFAC Recital Hall, Showcase Honor Band, guest conducted by Schmidt.
