MACOMB, IL — In honor of Banned Books Week, Western Illinois University Libraries will host the seventh annual Banned and Determined event starting at noon Wednesday, Sept. 24 in the Leslie F. Malpass Library, room 180. The event is open free to the public.

According to University Libraries Assistant Professor Krista Bowers Sharpe, comics and graphic novels are the theme for this year's Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of challenged literature sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA).

"Titles such as Alison Bechdel's 'Fun Home,' Marjane Satrapi's 'Persepolis' and Jeff Smith's 'Bone' series have come under fire in many schools and libraries," she said. "Banned and Determined at Western will feature Professor Marjorie Allison and Assistant Professor Rebekah Buchanan (both from WIU's English and journalism department), who will talk about the importance of graphic novels and their place in the curriculum." (See http://cbldf.org/resources/banned-books-week-101/ for more information.)

Bowers Sharpe added that Western Illinois University Libraries' faculty and staff encourage all readers to join with the ALA in celebrating the freedom to read, not only during Banned Books Week—which is set from Sept. 21–27 this year—but at all times.

For more information, contact Bowers Sharpe at (309) 298-2785 or via email at KA-Bowers-Sharpe@wiu.edu.
