MACOMB, IL — Starting this fall semester, Western Illinois University students can take advantage of a new service at WIU that offers them a free suite of software to help them in their studies. According to University Technology (uTech) User Support Services Assistant Director Kevin Morgan, currently enrolled Western students can download Office 365, which includes the widely used software Microsoft Word (word-processing software), Excel (spreadsheet software) and PowerPoint (presentation software).

Morgan said students can go to wiu.edu/office365 and follow the instructions to download the software. (Students will need their WIU email addresses and their ECom passwords to log in.)

"The decision to offer Office 365 was easy," Morgan said. "The vast majority of students regularly use Word, Excel and PowerPoint for their classes, and this service allows WIU to provide them those programs, and much more, at no cost. Eliminating the expense of buying Office 365 will also enable students to gain some experience with the less common software like OneNote, Access, InfoPath and Publisher."

Morgan said a WIU student can continue to use this service as long as he or she is a currently enrolled student.

"Once the student transitions away from WIU, usually by graduating, he or she will no longer be able to use it," Morgan explained. "Students should be sure to back up their files stored in OneDrive before they lose access."

Morgan also said uTech staff can assist with log-in problems and access. Students can also search Western's Knowledgebase (see wiu.edu/kb for help with Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more). Another great resource is the Office 365 Community at community.office365.com, he added.
