MACOMB, IL -- During Summer 2013, Western Illinois University Facilities Management personnel completed numerous projects to spruce up the WIU campus, and this summer was no exception.

Visible projects completed during Summer 2014 include:

• Union renovation.

• Academic building maintenance, including such projects as new flooring and ceilings, and paint, electronic classroom upgrades and the renovation of Simpkins Hall 207. Fifteen classrooms received a fresh coat of paint, while 71 windows were replaced in building entry doors. More than 3,500 feet of floor tile was replaced in Tillman and Horrabin halls, as well as the agronomy building, and 16 new handrails were installed at various campus locations.

• Thompson Hall lobby remodel.

• Landscaping improvements: new bike pad and loops, Morgan and Grote Halls; Wetzel Park at North Quad, featuring a crushed granite walkway, flagstone patio and seating area with new trees, shrubs and perennial flowers; landscaping at the University Union entrance/patio; new benches in the mall area seating areas.

• Hanson Field scoreboard replacement.

• Western Hall new wood floor.

• Campus Recreation and East Village stair replacements.

• Horn Lodge residence replacement.

"Behind the scenes" projects include:

• Electrical infrastructure improvements.

• Beu Health Center pipe replacement and remodel (second floor).

In progress:

• School of Agriculture greenhouse.

• Brophy Hall tennis court resurfacing.

• Parking lot, Center for Performing Arts/Arts Quadrangle.

The projects are funded by reallocations of appropriated permanent improvement funds, deferred maintenance funds and capital development funding.

"At present, Western's deferred maintenance projects total more than $500 million. While the state's budget crisis certainly can impede these projects on our campus, when we do have funding for these critical projects, it is in our best interest to complete the repairs and upgrades," noted WIU President Jack Thomas. "I appreciate the expertise of the Facilities Management staff. Because of our skilled employees, we are able to do much of the repairs and improvements in house, which result in a cost savings to the University. It is essential that we maintain our campus' beauty while ensuring the comfort and safety of our students, faculty and staff."
