MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois University's Department of Political Science and Center for International Studies (CIS) are sponsoring the Day of International Peace at Western Tuesday, Sept. 23. According to CIS Assistant Director of Orientation and Student Activities Dana Vizdal, the worldwide International Day of Peace will be celebrated Sunday, Sept. 21, and WIU will hold its Peace Day celebration Sept. 23.

The event, which kicks off at 7 p.m. in the University Union Lincoln Room, will feature presentations and performances about the topic of world peace. Vizdal said individual presentations or group efforts connected to a class, student organization and/or department, as well as members of the community, are welcome.

Examples of possible presentation topics include:

  • an event or person who has made an important contribution to world peace;
  • a proposal about how to improve peace in a specific place or in the world as a whole;
  • a critical reflection about the topic; or
  • other relevant topics connected to peace and social justice.

According to Vizdal, a variety of presentation formats are welcome (including songs, poems, essays, skits, dance performances and/or other forms of expression). She noted that if a student chooses to present a poem or essay, he or she is encouraged to have some sort of audio or visual aid.
