Award-Winning Residence Hall Students

MACOMB, IL -- It's fitting that during the 2014 Winter Olympics, numerous Western Illinois University students brought home "the gold" so to speak.
At the Illinois Residence Hall Association (IRHA) conference, which was held in mid-February at Southern Illinois University, and at the Illinois State Residents Assistants (ISRAA) conference, held Feb. 22-23 at Illinois State University, WIU students who live and work in the residence halls were recognized for their efforts in programming, dedication to the profession and service.
Bringing home honors from the IRHA conference were Levi Campbell, a sophomore sociology major from Quincy (IL), who was named the Illinois Communication Coordinator of the Year; Alex Johnson, a senior pre-business conditional management sciences major from Geneva (IL), who was named the Illinois Residence Hall Association President of the Year; and Ashley Yorks, a senior sociology major from Daytona Beach (FL), who received the Carlene Verstraete Outstanding Service Award (VOSA) which recognizes outstanding "behind the scenes" dedication and service.
"Ashley's award in particular is important to highlight, because it is not given out each year, and is given only to graduating students to recognize the totality of their work at an institution and in the state," said Leann Meckler, assistant director of marketing and communication for University Housing and Dining Services at WIU.
Yorks, Esmeralda Moreno, a junior communication major from Peoria (IL), and Hannah Wegs, a freshman general studies major from Quincy (IL), were also awarded two Top 10 Program honors.
At the ISRAA conference, Kaylee McAllister, a sophomore sociology major from New Holland (IL), Matt Tillman, a junior recreation, park and tourism administration major from Rockford (IL), Shannon Sniegolski, a senior graphic communication major from Tinley Park (IL), and Tom Draper, a senior graphic communication major from Naperville (IL) each received an award for a Top 8 Program. Alex Rogers, a sophomore pre-law enforcement and justice administration major from Elk Grove Village (IL) was named First Year RA of the Year.
Western earned School of the Year honors at the ISRAA, and brought home the Program of the Year award for the annual Big Pink Volleyball event.
In addition, the Caroline Grote (WIU) Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) was recently named the Great Lakes Regional Building Block Chapter of the Year. The Building Block award was created to recognize one member institution that has made significant steps in the development of its NRHH, and to honor an NRHH chapter which has displayed tremendous effort and improvement in their residence hall environment from the previous academic year.
Current active members of WIU's NRHH chapter include: Matthew Jeslis, senior law enforcement and justice administration major from Plainfield (IL), Tori Worthen, a sophomore biology major from Virden (IL), Alexis Hill, a sophomore sociology major from Naperville (IL), Amy Bevins, a junior pre-social work major from Brimfield (IL), Kaylee McAllister, a sophomore sociology major from New Holland (IL), Porfirio Gallegos, a sophomore pre-law enforcement and justice administration major from Lisle (IL), Kelsey Jacob, a sophomore physical education K-12 major from Darien (IL), Angela Elzer, a junior biology major from Marseilles (IL), Justin Kim, a sophomore pre-law enforcement and justice administration major from Deerfield (IL), Joshua Diaz, a junior chemistry major from Tinley Park (IL), Elizabeth Lindstrom, a senior recreation, park and tourism administration major from Aurora (IL), Jenna Decker, a senior sociology major from Oak Forest (IL), Angelica Jasper, a senior psychology major from Wheaton (IL), Levi Campbell, a sophomore sociology major from Quincy (IL), Amanda O'Connor, a junior exercise science major from Carol Stream (IL), Shannon Sniegolski, a senior graphic communication major from Tinley Park (IL), Crystal Parchem, a junior law enforcement and justice administration major from Lombard (IL), Adrianna Czerlonko, a junior with a double major in forensic chemistry and law enforcement and justice administration from Des Plaines (IL), Hannah Drake, a junior forensic chemistry major from Charleston (IL), Brandon Johnson, sophomore communication major from Dolton (IL), Courtney Harbison, a sophomore pre-nursing major from Waterloo (IL), Casey Woodman, a junior broadcasting major from Cherry Valley (IL), Samantha Schwartz, a junior political science major from Beecher (IL), Katy Hattula, a senior special education major from Freeport (IL), Gabrielle Conway, a senior agriculture major from Plano (IL), Christopher Guidi, a senior with a double major in theatre and English from Farmington (IL), Thomas Draper, a senior graphic communication major from Naperville (IL), Amy Smith, a sophomore special education major from Hickory Hills (IL), and Alex Rogers, a sophomore pre-law enforcement and justice administration major from Elk Grove Village (IL).
New members include Abbi Clevenger, a freshman political science major from Bettendorf (IA), Josh Samuels, a freshman recreation, park and tourism administration major from St. Charles (IL), Meghan Hoyle, a freshman pre-elementary education major from Bushnell (IL), Rachel Hope, a junior pre-business supply chain management major from Geneva (IL), Cameron Anderson, a freshman computer science major from Roanoke (IL), Nick Breslin, a sophomore physics major from Galesburg (IL), Esmeralda Moreno, a junior communication major from Peoria (IL), Brianna Hooker, a freshman psychology major from Sycamore (IL), and Ajia Harris, a junior journalism major from Chicago (IL).
