MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University School of Agriculture will host an online lamb sale Monday-Tuesday, April 14-15. Offered through the WIU Sheep Unit, the sale can be accessed from 8 a.m. April 14 through 7 p.m. April 15 at wlivestock.com.

According to the WIU Sheep Unit's website, Western's flock consists of 50 spring lambing Hampshire influenced club lamb type ewes.

"The focus of our breeding program is to select for seedstock and elite prospects that can create a positive impact within our industry," explained WIU Farm Coordinator Heath Geiman. "In addition to selection, grazing management/pasture improvement is a strong focus. Through the use of cool season grasses and alternative forages, the WIU ewe flock is maintained on standing forages for the majority of the year."

Geiman noted the first online lamb sale of the season (held in early March) was a successful event, garnering sales in Illinois, as well as lamb sales to individuals in Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Iowa.

"The sale offering represented 10 percent of our fiscal year 2014 lamb crop, and net proceeds will service approximately 40 percent of our total projected FY'14 sheep unit expenses," Geiman added.
