MACOMB, IL - For the first time, the Western Illinois University Orchestras sponsored the Vamos Violin Concerto Competition on Oct. 19 in the COFAC Recital Hall.

The competition's name comes from Almita and Roland Vamos, who both taught violin and viola at WIU for 15 years in the 1970s and 1980s. The Vamos are among the leading violin and viola teachers in the world. The competition was for high school-age violinists.

Prizes were awarded to Emma Binosi, a ninth grader from Quincy, IL, Cristina Ciubancan, an eighth grader from Chicago, IL, and the first prize went to Paola Dara, a tenth grader at Grandville High School, in Grandville, MI.

Paola will have the opportunity to be the featured soloist on the WIU Symphony Orchestra concert on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the COFAC Recital Hall. The concert is open free to the public.
