MACOMB, IL -- A record number of runners (and walkers) have signed up for the second annual Fallen Soldiers 5k Run/Walk taking place this Saturday (Nov. 2) on the Macomb campus, but more runners and walkers are welcome to register through race day.

According to Holly Fecht, race co-coordinator, to date nearly 400 people have registered, which surpasses last year's event by 100. The scholarship fundraiser brought in nearly $10,000 at the 2012 inaugural event.

The event, which begins with a program at 8:30 a.m. in the Spencer Student Recreation Center followed by the race at 9 a.m., honors two WIU alumni who were killed in the line of duty, Capt. Derek Dobogai and Lt. Col. Robert Baldwin.

Money raised from the 5k Run/Walk is directed toward the WIU Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Fund, which supports veterans and service members currently enrolled at Western. Registration is $35 and can be completed online at https://www.wiu.com/alumni or at the Spencer Student Recreation Center on race day.

Race packets will be available at the Spencer Student Recreation Center from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 for those who have pre-registered by Oct. 30. Check-in will also be held from 7-8:30 a.m. in the Student Recreation Center lower level south gym (MAC gym) for those who have not picked up their packets in advance and for walk-in registration.
