MACOMB, IL -- Services for Dr. Subhash N. Jani, 73, of Macomb, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at the Flanner Buchanan Funeral Center in Indianapolis. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. today (Thursday, July 18) at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb.

Jani was a professor of special education at Western Illinois University for 29 years, retiring in 2000. Dr. Jani, who grew up in in India and British East Africa (modern-day Tanzania), received a Doctor of Optometry degree in London, interned in Oxford, then immigrated to the United States in 1963 to pursue further education including a master's degree in physiological optics from Indiana University, and a master's degree and Ph.D. in special education from Purdue University. He moved to Macomb in 1971. In addition to teaching at Western, he practiced optometry, continuing through June 27, 2013.

Jani is survived by his wife, Linda Aylesworth Jani; three children; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter and a sister-in-law.

JAIHO is a program created and funded by Jani to bring students from all cultural backgrounds together with Macomb community members in a annual one-day sports event. This year's JAIHO event included a cricket game featuring Indian students teaching the game to local counterparts followed by a pizza party bringing everyone together.
