MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's Visual Production Center (VPC) Senior Photographer George Hartmann earned a first place award and two honorable mentions at the recent University Photographers Association of America annual convention held last week in Chicago. More than 300 photographs were submitted in nine categories.

Hartmann received the first place award in the "News" category for his photograph of Dustin Whitaker's mother and son at the December 2012 commencement following the posthumous awarding of Whitaker's degree. Hartmann also received an honorable mention in the "News" category for capturing students mid-air while sledding near campus during a snow day. He earned an honorable mention in the "Campus Environment" category for a photo of fireworks cascading above the Sherman Hall bell tower during the 2012 Independence Day celebration on campus.

"George, along with VPC staff Larry Dean, Brian Kreps, Sarah Ritter and Neil Wiarda, each bring a unique perspective to every photo they take. Their creativity and expertise lead to incredible photographs that will be enjoyed for years to come and reflect our outstanding campuses," said Darcie Shinberger, assistant vice president for advancement and public services. "We congratulate George on bringing home honors from this year's UPAA conference. His work is indicative of the VPC's quality and commitment to capturing the best of Western Illinois University."

In addition, Shinberger received the 2013 UPAA Board Appreciation Award, which honors a non-UPAA member who has made a significant impact on the profession of photography in service to higher education by supporting the professional development and occupation of university photographers.
