MACOMB, IL – Joan Richards, a staff clerk in Human Resources, has been named the Western Illinois University Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for June.

Richards was hired at WIU in February 2007 as a clerk in Equal Opportunity and Access, and then in June 2007, she was rehired as a clerk in Human Resources. In August 2007, Richards became an image processing technician II in Human Resources, and in June 2009, she was reallocated as a staff clerk in Human Resources.

Richards' nominator said she always "greets employees with a smile and genuine interest in assisting them with their concerns."

"Joan is always on top of everything in the office and very quick to assist anyone that comes in," her nominator said. "This is a very high profile office on campus, and she realizes the importance of taking care of everyone that comes in. She shows great initiative that contributes to the positive effort. Her communication with community members, staff and students present a very positive image for our office."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque. The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year.

Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) Public Relations Representative Wendi Mattson at WK-Mattson@wiu.edu.
