Oaks: Residence Life Director

MACOMB, IL -- Mishelle (Banas) Oaks, director of academic support programs at Monmouth College, has been named director of residence life-University Housing and Dining Services at Western Illinois University, effective June 4.

Oaks has served as the director of academic support programs at Monmouth College since July 2011. Previously she was the assistant director of residence life at the University of Central Missouri from 2006-2011. Oaks has also served as the complex director at Minnesota State University (2004-2006); as residence life coordinator at Kansas State University (1999-2004); and as assistant hall director at Missouri State University (1997-1999). She served as a resident assistant at Western from 1996-1997.

"Mishelle's experience in residence life and her familiarity with Western will be an asset as she continues to provide an outstanding level of service and involvement for our students," said John Biernbaum, associate vice president for student services-student life. "We are excited to have Mishelle join Western's Division of Student Services."

Oaks earned her Ed.D. from University of Missouri-Columbia; her master's degree from Missouri State University; and her bachelor's degree from Western.

"I am excited to work for University Housing and Dining Services in the director of residence life role. I was impressed with the staff and students when I interviewed, and I am looking forward to what can be done with this team," Oaks said. "I know Western has a great housing program and I am honored to be able to take this program forward to make it even stronger."

She has been a member of the Upper-Midwest region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers, serving as committee chair and a member of the executive committee. She has served as a fraternity and sorority adviser, and has been a member of such community organizations as Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Relay for Life. Oaks is currently a member of the WIU Alumni Council.
