Campus Recreation Recognizes Students with Intramural Awards
May 9, 2013
MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois University Campus Recreation has honored two students with annual intramural sports awards. According to Director of Intramural Sports and Student Development Dustin Van Sloten, Mike Ungari (senior, Oakwood Hills, IL), a construction management major, was honored with the John Nickerson Award, which is given to a WIU male student, and Lauren Ivan (senior, Downers Grove, IL), an exercise science major, was honored with the Tammy McGovern Award, which is given to a WIU female student.
Van Sloten said the annual awards are bestowed on intramural participants who best exemplify the spirit of intramural sports.
"Mike and Lauren have participated in numerous intramural events and have served as captains for the majority of their teams," he explained. "These awards recognize outstanding leadership, achievement and community building as recognized by the intramural staff."
Van Sloten said participation in intramural sports helps students succeed in the classroom by helping them to establish new friendships and/or expanding their existing relationships, and participation also improves their physical skills. He added that the Nickerson Award was started in 1973 and the McGovern Award was started in 1982. Both Nickerson and McGovern were active in intramural sports during their time at Western and both unexpectedly passed away while they were students.
