Wind Ensemble President’s Concert April 26

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University School of Music's Wind Ensemble will perform their President's concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26 at the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

Under the baton of Mike Fansler, director of bands, the ensemble's program includes "Symphonic Movement," by Václav Nelhybel, "Seal Lullaby," by Eric Whitacre and featuring Emma Thomas on piano, "Concerto Logic," by Carter Pann featuring Assistant Professor Jeffrey Brown on piano, "Variations on America," by Charles Ives with guest conductor Associate Director of Bands Matt Thomas, "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral," by Richard Wagner and "March, Op. 99," Sergei Prokofiev.

Brown, who came to Western in Fall 2009, has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia as a solo recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestras. As a member of the Music Teachers National Association, he is in demand as a teacher, adjudicator and clinician. He has earned his performer's certificate, master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees at the Eastman School of Music. His bachelor of music degree is from the University of Missouri.

Matt Thomas conducts the Concert Band, University Band, Pep Band and the Marching Leathernecks. Before coming to WIU, he taught at a Cobb County, GA, school district and directed performances at the University of Georgia Middle School Festival and the Midwest Clinic. While finishing his doctorate at Florida State University, Thomas was an associate conductor of concert ensembles and assisted with the marching and athletic bands. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky and his master's and doctorate degrees from Florida State University.

Emma Thomas, daughter of Matt Thomas, is a fourth grade student at Edison Elementary in Macomb.
