Minority Health Month Celebrated at Western Illinois University

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University will celebrate Minority Health Month throughout April with numerous educational speakers and discussions. This year's theme is "STAND UP for Your Health!"

Events planned through the remainder of the month include:

Tuesday, April 16: 5 – 6:30 p.m., Byron Oden-Shabazz will moderate a discussion titled, "Address Health Disparities Among Men in Minority Populations," University Union Lincoln Room.

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., "What Have I Done to Protect My Health?" – numerous campus locations.

Wednesday, April 17: 5 – 6:30 p.m., Panel discussion on childhood obesity, panelists Tina Saddler and Mei Wen, Stipes Hall, room 121.

1 – 3 p.m., University Counseling Center, walk-in stress management clinic, Memorial Hall, room 122.

Thursday, April 18: 2 – 4 p.m., University Counseling Center, walk-in stress management clinic, Memorial Hall, room 122.

Tuesday, April 23: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., "What Have I Done to Protect My Health?" – numerous campus locations.

6 p.m., Keynote address by Linda Rae Murray, chief medical officer for the Cook County Department of Health and Cook County Health and Hospital System, titled " Contemporary Minority Health Issues ," University Union Sandburg Lounge. Light refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, April 24: 4 – 5:30 p.m., presentation and panel discussion titled, "Ethnicity and Health," Stipes Hall, room 121.

1 – 3 p.m., University Counseling Center, walk-in stress management clinic, Memorial Hall, room 122.

Thursday, April 25: 5 – 6:30 p.m., Showing of the HBO documentary "The Weight of the Nation – Confronting America's Obesity Epidemic," Stipes Hall, room 121.

2 – 4 p.m., University Counseling Center, walk-in stress management clinic, Memorial Hall, room 122.

Tuesday, April 30: 3:30 – 5 p.m., Get Fit with President Thomas, Hanson Field. WIU President Jack Thomas will present a variety of activities, and participants are encouraged to wear active clothes. Raffle prizes will be given away through various drawings.
