MACOMB, IL – Relay for Life of Western Illinois University is slated to take place 6 p.m. Friday, April 12 through 6 a.m. Saturday, April 13 on the WIU-Macomb campus (behind Stipes and Morgan halls; rain location is the Donald S. Student Spencer Recreation Center).

The WIU chapter of Colleges Against Cancer is organizing the widespread Relay for Life cancer-fundraising event at Western, in conjunction with Colleges Against Cancer (CAC), to help fund cancer research. According to the CAC website, it is a "nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by working to implement the programs and mission of the American Cancer Society."

Christina Beisel, an international student pursuing her master's degree in mathematics and a member of WIU's CAC chapter, said the community fundraising walk is held overnight for a reason.

"Because cancer doesn't sleep, we won't either," Beisel noted. "Members of each team take turns walking around the track. Food, games and activities will provide entertainment, and our activities and events include Zumba, a silent auction, a DJ, various musicians and a bags tournament. There will be themed laps, including a survivors' lap for people who have won the fight against cancer, and we will have a luminaria ceremony, which is to honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease."

The Relay for Life for Western Illinois University is open to the public; individuals can register (for a $10 registration fee) on the Relay for Life of WIU website at relayforlife.org/wiuil. All proceeds donated will benefit The American Cancer Society to help fund cancer research, patient services and counseling services for cancer patients.
