MACOMB, IL – Waubonsie Valley High School senior Madeline Zehnal, of Aurora, has been selected for a Centennial Honors Scholarship, which covers four years of tuition, fees and a residence hall room at Western Illinois University.

High school students with an ACT score of 32 or higher and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher have the opportunity to apply for the scholarship.

At WIU, Zehnal plans to major in special education, participate in a choir and play intramural soccer.

Zehnal said she chose Western because the faculty members she met on a campus visit shared their enthusiasm for education with her.

"My dad and I visited many colleges that offered a degree in special education; Western was the last college we visited," she said. "There, the faculty cared about me as a person, not just another student."

In high school, Zehnal participated in choir, Peer Partners and Best Buddies, volleyball, swimming and theater.

After graduation from WIU, Zehnal hopes to become a special education teacher.
