International Education Week Events at WIU Through Nov. 15

MACOMB, IL – International Education Week will be celebrated at Western Illinois University through Thursday, Nov. 15.
International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide and is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education.
Events planned as part of the local celebration include:
• Saturday, Nov. 3:
- 6:30 p.m. – Phi Beta Delta International Scholarship fundraiser: Mediterranean meal, live music and silent auction – Macomb American Legion, 221 E. Washington St. Proceeds benefit scholarships supporting international education. Tickets at the door are $25 for adults and $20 for students.
• Sunday, Nov. 4:
- 1-6 p.m. - World Cup soccer tournament – Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center. Register in the Campus Recreation Office, cost: $5/person.
• Tuesday, Nov. 6:
- noon, Cultural Café: Saudi Arabian Women's Group – University Union Heritage Room.
• Wednesday, Nov. 7:
- 3:30 p.m. - Difficult Conversations Series: "Tensions in the Classroom: Clashing Ideas/Clashing Values" – University Union Lamoine Room
- 4 p.m. - "Crossing Borders" film and discussion – University Union Sandburg Theatre - This is a feature documentary that follows four Moroccan and four American university students as they travel together through Morocco and in the process of discovering "The Other," discover themselves. There will be a discussion immediately following the screening.
• Thursday, Nov. 8:
- 12:30 p.m. – "Why I Take Students Abroad" – University Union Capitol Rooms – Panel discussion by three faculty leaders about the ups and downs of taking students outside the U.S. Learn how they got their ideas, what they teach abroad and how rewarding this kind of experience can be. Time will be reserved for questions. Presented by Guadalupe Cabedo-Timmons, Joseph Dobson, Daniel Yoder and Kim McDaniel.
- 2:30-4 p.m. – Coffee, Culture, and Conversation: Topic – Internationalization versus globalization – University Union Sandburg Lounge - Meet people from around the world and explore the given topic from various cultural perspectives. Open free to the public and coffee and refreshments will be served.
- 7 p.m., Global Lens Film and discussion: "Bunny Chow" (South Africa) – University Union Sandburg Theatre. The Global Lens Film Series is a selection of award-winning films from around the globe, selected especially because of their ability to promote cross-cultural understanding through the medium of film. Following the film will be a discussion led by members of the WIU and Macomb community familiar with South Africa. Admission is free and free popcorn and soft drinks will be served.
• Friday, Nov. 9:
- Noon, "Al-Talem (education) in Saudi Arabia" – WIU Multicultural Center - Sponsored by the WIU International Friendship Club. WIU student Ali Alshammari will give the presentation mainly about the education in Saudi Arabia and the differences between the education systems of Saudi Arabia and U.S. There will be authentic Saudi food served immediately after the presentation. The cost for lunch is $4.
• Monday, Nov. 12:
- All day - International Dress Day – All campus - Everyone is encouraged to dress in traditional clothing from any country you choose.
- 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. - Language Boulevard – Union Concourse - WIU students will have information tables set up to display information about languages other than English.
- 2 p.m. – International Dress Day picture – Meet in the Union Concourse
• Tuesday, Nov. 13:
- 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. - Saudi Arabian Cultural Immersion Room – Union Capitol Rooms
- 5 p.m. – "Spanish cooking class – paella!" – St. Francis of Assisi Newman Center - Foreign Languages Professor Gauda Cabedo-Timmons will give a lesson on how to cook the classic Spanish dish paella.
• Wednesday, Nov. 14:
- Noon - "Proposing a Study Abroad Course: 5 Easy Steps to Success" – University Union Capitol Rooms - Turn your ideas about taking students abroad into a reality. Learn about selecting a destination, time and course, get examples of instructional models, find out about the FLGI designation and discover the steps to proposing a Study Abroad Course. Presented by Kim McDaniel.
- 4 p.m. – "Weaving Historical Strands" – Leslie F. Malpass Library Garden Lounge - Students from around the world will be on hand to model their traditional costumes. Learn about textiles, the variety of fibers and dyes, spinning/weaving/knitting tools, earliest evidence for weaving and cross-cultural patterns regarding gender.
- 7 p.m. - Global Lens film and discussion: "Toll Booth" (Turkey) – University Union Sandburg Theatre - Following the film will be a discussion led by members of the WIU and Macomb community from Turkey. Admission is free and free popcorn and soft drinks will be served.
• Thursday, Nov. 15:
- 2:30 p.m. – Student Fulbright Meeting - Union Capitol Rooms/Room 231 WIU-QC campus - Learn about paid Fulbright opportunities abroad for students.
- 3:30 p.m. - Faculty Fulbright Meeting - Union Capitol Rooms/Room 231 WIU-QC campus - Learn about Fulbright opportunities abroad for scholars and faculty.
- 7 p.m. - Global Lens film and discussion: "Stolen Life" (China) – University Union Sandburg Theater - Following the film will be a discussion led by members of the WIU and Macomb community from China. Admission is free and free popcorn and soft drinks will be served.
