WIU Multicultural Center Offices to hold open house Aug. 24

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University's Casa Latina Cultural Center, Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, the Women's Center and Interpersonal Violence Prevention Initiative will hold joint open houses from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 in the Multicultural Center. New and returning students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend and refreshments will be provided.

Women's Center Director Janine Cavicchia said members of the Multicultural Center staff and volunteer team will be on hand to greet visitors and give tours of the building, which includes a resource library, kitchen and boardroom, as well as study, activity, computer, multipurpose and lactation rooms, a pool table, four themed lounges and office suites.

In recognition and celebration of Women's Equality Day, members of the League of Women Voters of McDonough County will be available to complete voter registration and discuss opportunities for involvement in League activities.

"Anyone who would like to register to vote in this fall's local and national elections will need to bring two forms of identification, including one showing current address," Cavicchia said.

The U.S. Congress designated Aug. 26 as Women's Equality Day in 1971 to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote in 1920.

The Interpersonal Violence Prevention Initiative (IVPI), housed in the Women's Center, suite 209 in the Multicultural Center, is part of the three-year, $300,000 grant awarded to WIU in 2010 from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women to help reduce domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking on college campuses.
