- To prepare students for further graduate study at the doctoral level and/or careers in performance and teaching
- To challenge students to increase their knowledge of theory, history and aesthetics of music and to provide appropriate opportunities for them to develop a high level of cognitive musical and creative skills.
- To equip students with analytical, conceptual, historical, technical and artistic skills to be successful in their chosen field.

Summer Program
Designed especially for the practicing teacher, the School of Music also offers a four-year summer session Master’s program in music education. Detailed information may be found in the Graduate Handbook.

Graduate Assistantships
A number of graduate assistantships are available each year to qualified applicants. Music graduate assistantships provide the student with a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend in return for 13-20 hours per week of work in the department. Graduate assistants have the opportunity to work closely with faculty in teaching, performance, and the directing and administration of performing ensembles.
