Panelist Biographies
(The colloquium "Information and Authority: Reliability and Legalities" (see bibliography) will be held October 23 in the Garden Lounge, Malpass Library, from 3-4 p.m.)


Larry Balsamo received his PhD from the University of Missouri and is Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Western Illinois University. Dr. Balsamo is a traditionally trained specialist in U.S. History with emphasis on the Civil War Era and Lincoln. Awarded the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award in 1990 and is recipient of a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the improvement of the teaching of American History at the secondary school level.

Bill Knight received his Masters from Sangamon State and is Associate Professor in English and Journalism at Western Illinois University. Mr. Knight's journalism has won awards from the Illinois Associated Press (for Best Commentary), the International Labor Communications Association (Best Editorial or Column), and the Suburban Newspaper Association of America (for Best Sports Writing). An author of numerous books, Mr. Knight also freelances to various area dailies and periodicals.

Ty Beckmann is a junior at Western Illinois University and is majoring in Manufacturing/Engineering. He is a member of the Illinois Centennial Honors College and has received the Junior Honors Scholarship. Mr. Beckmann is currently serving as president of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society and is the Apple Computer Campus Representative.
