In the Spring of 2009, WIU Libraries established the Digitization Unit to assist in the creation of digital objects and collections as well as produce unit policies and procedures. The Digitization Unit gears its efforts toward Interlibrary Loan services, Reserves, online access, collection development and preservation.

This unit is designed specifically to use digitizing equipment and methods to address the Libraries' mission to "support the education, research and information needs of the faculty, the university administration, staff, students, and the people of the region by making its rich collections and information services available anytime and anywhere" (see Annual Report, Strategic Plan). In addition, The Digitization Unit is a regional leader in the creation of digital collections and collaborating with rural communities to create on-demand objects for public access.
