Course overview:
Both the United States and Northern Ireland promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Shared democratic principles are essential for ensuring equality and equity with respect to civil and political rights and are integral to effective resolution of social issues, cultural acceptance and integration of diverse populations into mainstream society, and conflict prevention.
This course integrates the academic study (legislative enactments, journal articles, interactive media, and case studies) of human rights and democracy with the living and evolving cultural, real-world needs as exposed through first-hand observation. Although both the United States and Northern Ireland promote and maintain the ideal of acceptance toward cultural differences and ethnic practices and beliefs, their actual policies, practices, histories, beliefs, politics, and economic circumstances are quite different. These differences are reflected in the manner in which human rights are viewed, portrayed, protected, and balanced against the competing rights of individuals, groups, and the government.
