Course overview:

Few regions in Europe have been as influential in the development of Western Civilization as Italy, especially Rome. It is one of the most important cities in the formation of western cultural tradition—politics, art, architecture, philosophy and literature all have been heavily influenced by the Roman experience and model. Popular media presentations such as the movie Gladiator, the TV series Rome, numerous programs on the ancient world and sports coverage all influence perceptions of Italy and Rome. Despite discussions of Roman history, culture and the role of Ancient Rome in Western Civilization, the city of Rome remains intangible for many.

This Study Abroad Course focuses on four themes: The Roman Republic, The Age of Empire, The City of God and Medieval Rome, and Modern Rome and Italy. You will explore these through visits to a mixture of sites, museums, galleries, and churches in Rome and central Italy. Using Italy as a campus not only helps make it "real", it provides first-hand evidence to make critical evaluations of pre-existing stereotypes and perceptions.
