International Admissions

Students and faculty from all over the world come to Western Illinois University for our outstanding undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well our pre-professional and certificate programs. Explore all of the Academic Programs we have to offer.

International students attend on an F-1 or J-1 student visa. Permanent residents or asylees should complete the appropriate application through Undergraduate Admissions or School of Graduate Studies.

Western Illinois University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Western's English-as-a-Second-Language (WESL) Institute is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation.

 Application Process

Students should submit an application at least 6 months before you plan to attend WIU. Adequate time should be allowed for reviewing your application materials, submitting your financials, and processing your acceptance before you make your visa appointment and travel arrangements.

Click Apply Now at the top of the page to submit your application. The following items are also required:

  • $30 application fee.
  • Official academic records.
  • Official test scores such as TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, and GMAT.
  • Original financial documentation, including an Affidavit of Support.
  • Any additional material required by the academic department (for Graduate applicants only). Please consult the Checklist of Departmental Requirements.

We will process your application once all of the required application materials have been received. These materials become a permanent part of your academic record and are not returnable or transferable to a third party.

For undergraduate students, an admission decision will be made by our office once your file is complete. We will inform you of the admisison decision by email and by postal mail.

For graduate students, your application will be forwarded to the graduate program for review. The time it takes to review your application varies from office to office. Once we have been notified of the admission decision, we will contact you by email and by postal mail.

For WESL students, our office will issue your acceptance letter and I-20 (if applicable) after receiving your application, verification of high school graduation, and required financials.

Upon acceptance, our office will contact you with your options for shipping your acceptance and I-20, if applicable.

Dates and Deadlines

All required application materials must be received by the dates below for the best possible consideration to your desired program and term. Some graduate programs have earlier deadlines. You should consult the academic department for their specific due dates.

  • Fall (August) Term:  May 1
  • Spring (January) Term:  October 1
  • Summer (May/June) Term:  March 1 (Undergraduate and English language students only.)
