Center for International Studies, Executive Director's Message

Dr Carter holding banner

Hello and welcome to Western Illinois University and the Center for International Studies. My name is Dr. Richard Carter and I serve as Executive Director of the School of Distance Learning, International Studies, and Outreach. Did you know Western Illinois University is an active member of the international higher education community? International Studies is one of this great institution’s strategic initiatives and I want to confirm our commitment to internationalizing Western Illinois University.

As part of the University’s internationalization efforts I often travel to Washington, D.C. to visit with various embassy officials. Some of the embassies I have visited include Bahrain, Botswana, Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Peru, South Korea, Spain, Thailand and Vietnam. Many times I travel abroad and most recently I have been lucky enough to visit Botswana, China, and Myanmar. It won’t be long before I am off to China from March 1-16 where I will be participating in the 2014 State of Illinois Higher Education Trade Mission. I am looking forward to visiting high schools, colleges, and businesses in Shanghai, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Yiwu, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shenyang, and several other cities.

Our commitment to international outreach can also be seen within our efforts in International Admissions, International Orientation, Study Abroad, and Western's English as a Second Language (WESL) Institute. Most of all, I encourage you to picture yourself at Western Illinois University and experience first-hand the friendly, support provided by the staff, faculty, and community.

Please browse around our website and acquaint yourself with our programs, support and activities. I believe education is important for all because the internationalization of education has the power to change the world. The Center for International Studies is committed to encouraging diversity, cultural competence and engagement of all students, faculty and staff in initiatives that support these goals.

Again, welcome to the Center for International Studies at Western Illinois University!
