To be considered for undergraduate admission, prospective international students must meet the following requirements:
|
- If applying as a freshman, hold an academic credential that is comparable to a US high school diploma and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) equal to or greater than 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
|
- If applying as a transfer student with the equivalent of 24 or more semester credit hours from a recognized post-secondary institution, have cumulative grade point average equal to or greater than 2.0 on a 4.0 scale on all post-secondary academic coursework.
|
|
If English is not the prospective international student’s native language, he or she will be required to submit evidence of English proficiency. Evidence of English language proficiency may be provided by one of the following:

- Submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report showing a minimum satisfactory score of 79-80 (iBT), 213 (CBT) or 550 (PBT) or
- Satisfactory score on Western’s English-as-a-Second Language (WESL) placement test or
- Successful completion of Western’s English-as-a-Second Language (WESL) Program.

To be considered for graduate admission, prospective international graduate students must meet the following requirements:
|
|
- Hold a degree which is comparable to an accredited US bachelor’s degree and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) equal to or greater than 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
|
- If English is not the prospective international student’s native language, the prospective international student will be required to submit evidence of English proficiency. Evidence of English language proficiency may be provided by one of the following:
- Submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report showing a minimum satisfactory of 80 (iBT) or 213 (CBT) or 550 (PBT) except for the following programs:
- Chemistry minimum 71 iBT/197 CBT/530 PBT
- Communication minimum 92 iBT/237 CBT/580 PBT
- Educational Administration & Supervision minimum 88 iBT/230 CBT/575 PBT
- English minimum 88 iBT/230 CBT/575 PBT
- Law Enforcement & Justice Administration minimum 68 iBt/190 CBT/520 PBT
- Mathematics minimum 61 iBT/173 CBT/500 PBT
- Satisfactory score on Western’s English-as-a-Second Language (WESL) placement test or
- Successful completion of Western’s English-as-a-Second Language (WESL) Program or
- Complete a bachelor’s degree from an American institution with four years in residence and within two years of matriculation at Western Illinois University.

Prospective international graduate students are subject to all requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies and the program to which they are applying. Some graduate departments have higher admission standards or additional requirements for acceptance. International graduate students may also be required to remediate any deficiencies in previous college work by completing undergraduate courses at Western Illinois University

To be considered for Western’s English-as-a-Second Language Program only, prospective international students must meet the following requirements:
|
|
- Hold an academic credential that is comparable to a US high school diploma
- Be 17 years of age or older at the time of matriculation to Western Illinois University
|
|
|
|
Western’s English-as-a-Second Language Program
|
|
- is a member and has met the standards of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).
- is accredited through the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation.
