New Assistantship Category for Fall 2012: Teaching Support Assistant (TSA)

Effective Fall 2012, the School of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce a new assistantship category available to hiring departments: Teaching Support Assistant (TSA). This position provides assistance/support to an academic course instructor. TSA primary (i.e. greater than 50%) duties consist of one or more of the following activities:

  • taking attendance,
  • proctoring exams/quizzes,
  • grading,
  • developing academic instructional materials,
  • tutoring,
  • facilitating review/study sessions,
  • other instructional support services. 

The monthly stipend amount for TSA positions will be the same as graduate and research assistants’ and is currently $920/month. Likewise, TSA’s will be required to enroll in 9 s.h. of graduate work and/or undergraduate deficiencies in order to be eligible for the assistantship position. Students hired under this classification will be exempt from the federal taxation on tuition waivers as taxable income (Internal Revenue Service regulation IRC 127).
